Afternoon all, I'm in the process of getting a PC and top of my list of toys to go with it is music production software. Can anyone help me with recommendations and/or articles to look up. Also what level of sound card etc would be advisable? DW

It's normally a toss up between cubase and reason. People I know prefer cubase, although it is a steeper learning curve apparently. I've had a quick dabble on both but did not have a midi keyboard so gave up quickly! Best thing to do is get hold of demo's of both and try them out to see which one you feel more comfortable with. Incidentally what's the spec on the PC. I'm looking to get one soon for the same reason. Money's a bit tight so looking for a bargain. Some of those Dell ones look OK but not sure whether they'll leave me short on the processing front. Try www.djsource.co.uk/forums/Loads of info there about production and the like.

As well as the processor, get as much RAM and as big a hard drive as you can - music production takes a huge amount of resource to run and store Sound cards are quite cheap nowadays - minimum choice would be an Audigy IMO, and you can get an Audigy 4 for only about 80 - 100 quid Software-wise it's up to you really - Cubase and Reason are probably the most popular choices (Logic is hugely powerful but ridiculously expensive as well) Doesn't really matter which from Cubase or Reason you go for, both are very good Reason is easier to get started in but maybe a little less flexible than Cubase - but as long as you stick with one or the other then once you really get into it you will learn to do the same things in each anyway And there's loads of resource out there on the net about it all, just use Google

reason, cubase and ableton all have their own strengths and weaknesses, IMO start with reason or ableton
ableton is the best all rounder, plus can be used live (obviously), has soon really good processers that are far superior to any cubase or reason vst's
cubase is the best sequencer
reason has the best virtual instruments and refills (sounds) and is generally more user friendly and fun to use
you can however use them all, once you get your head around them and re-wire (if you got the bucks)
get a good soundcard, a midi keyboard, several manuals/guides and spend a lot, lot, lot of time playing and getting your head around it

Chars for the feed back. The spec of the pc I'm looking at is 1024mb ram (dual core), 250GB hd. the standard sound card is, 5.1 High Definition 6 Channel Audio Codec although I'm likely to upgrade to a better one. Any thoughts on what I could get away with whilst not loosing the quality? Link to find the deal I'm probably going to buy is... www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTCONFIGPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=73770the one down side I can see to this deal is that I think the co. involved used to sponsor Charlton Athletic. See you next Friday DW
