Sick Trumpet, second session comes from one of Manchester’s finest DJs, Kelvin Brown.
Growing up in Coventry, Kelvin's first exposure to music was through hip hop
and reggae. He then became involved in the rapidly expanding Drum and Bass
scene in the Midlands of the early 90's.
Moving to Manchester to study, he quickly began to DJ at house parties
across the city. He was then offered a residency at Manchester's infamous
Electric Chair club night, which he still holds to this day. Here he has
played alongside guests such as AtJazz, Charlie Dark, London Electricity and
Afronaught.
4 years ago he set up his own night Eyes Down in Manchester along with his
DJ partner Jon-K. Eyes Down has become Manchester's premier night for new,
leftfield and adventurous music, with guests including Recloose, ?uestove
(The Roots), Dego, Landslide, I.G Culture, Jazzanova, Domu, RSL (Live) and
The Rebirth (Live). Eyes Down has received widespread recognition from both
local and national press such as the Face, Jockey Slut and the Guardian,
with much of the attention directed towards Kelvin and Jon's uncompromising
and highly individual mix of house, hip hop, jazz, broken beats, disco and
afrobeat.
Aside from his residencies, Kelvin has undertaken increasing work as a guest
DJ across the country, including regular spots at London's legendary Plastic
People, where other guests have included Theo Parrish, Gilles Peterson,
Moodymann, Madlib, Francois Kervorkian, Mr Scruff and Masters at Work. In
addition he has played at the Sonar Kollectiv night in London, Jigsaw music
in Birmingham, various Fat City club nights and the Electric Souls event,
alongside Ashley Beedle, Bugz in the Attic and Amp Fiddler. Kelvin also
regularly works as a support DJ for bands including De Lata, Reel People and
Fela Kuti's drummer Tony Allen. He has also done various radio shows
including a guest mix for Benji B 'Deviation' show on Radio One Extra.
